Ladies and Gentlemen with you: Brad Daugherty
- Hello Brad it’s an honor for us to have the opportunity to talk with such a legend of the game; as a poker player I wish I had one of those victories one day.
- Hi David, nice to meet you. I am sure you will find yourself at the winning table soon.
- Thank you sir. Well, everybody’s eager to know more about you, please tell us how you started playing this marvelous game of poker.
- My first memory in poker was in the fall of 1968 riding a train from Payette Idaho to Kansas City Mo and back. My two teammates and I were representing the State of Idaho at the Future Farmers of America National Dairy judging contest which is held every year in Kansas City Missouri. We had a great time on the trip coming in 5th in the judging. The part of the trip that stands out the most on the trip besides the Juicy fillet mignon we had there was playing penny ante poker on the train ride each way. I don’t think we even slept on that two day trip each way. We just spent all our time playing poker. I guess quitting a big winner with 35 cents extra in my pocket made me feel like a great poker player.
- Money won is always the sweetest, please continue
- In the early 70’s I worked on highway construction and for entertainment at night I would either play pool or poker. I was 19-24 years old, making good money, and not a very good poker player with plenty of gamble. With that combination I put many bad beats on my opponents but usually ended up going broke. When you are young you have no fear, especially when you have plenty of money. This makes me smile nowadays when all the young guns think that I am tight because I don’t ram and jam like they do. I have been there, done that.
In those days poker was just trial and error. If something worked you kept doing it. If something didn’t, you would go broke. There wasn’t the information out then that you have now. It was always good to get tips from the more experienced players. I developed a lot of friendships with the older players. Most of them were willing to help a young player they liked. You guys don’t know how lucky you are to be able to sit at home and learn to play.
- It sure is an incredible advantage. And tell us Brad, why do you like poker?
I like the challenge of battling wits with other players. It is fun to make the best play with the information you have. Either bluffing to win a big pot or showing weakness and letting someone bluff there money off to me. Everyone plays on equal ground no matter your age, sex, physical condition. It’s a game we can play our whole lifetime. With the convenience of the internet we can even enjoy it at home.
- What did you do to play better and perfect your style?
I read all the books that I could and discussed the game with everyone that I thought was a good player. It is amazing how much you can learn just by discussing your hands with other players. Just a simple question, how would you of played this? I have been very fortunate in having many friends that were very good players. We have spent many hours discussing plays. You guys are very fortunate to have this time to learn to play. Lots of good books to read, forums to discuss the game, and the internet where you can play thousands of tournaments or hands in a fraction of the time it took players of my generation to play.
- How did you feel after the Big Win at the WSOP?
- I had lots of ups and downs on my way to winning. At one time heads up, Don Holt had me about 10-1 in chips. Then after a few pots and couple double ups I was able to break Don and win the Title along with One Million Dollars and the gold bracelet. After the final hand I felt triumphant and very happy after a long week of battling at the tables.
- The dream of every single poker player; I can’t imagine your happiness that day. Let’s talk about your expectations concerning the OPWC
I expect to see the OPWC to become the standard for online poker tournaments. OPWC is where the world will go to see who is who in the world of Online Poker. Players will go here to see where they stack up against everyone else. I can see lots of camaraderie from players in different parts of the world, whether just as friendships or where they are competing against other countries.
- What tourneys will you be found and which poker room?
My username is OPWCBrad and I will be found Playing tournaments at PKR Poker, Black Chip Poker, Lotos Poker and Carbon Poker. Naturally I’ll mostly be playing No-Limit Hold’em tournaments, but if I don’t have enough time for a tournament you might find me playing a little side action.
- Any advice for the online poker players at the OPWC?
I think one of the most important things to do is keep good records of your play. That way you can see where your leaks are and where you are winning. It helps you know on what part of your game you need to work on. Practice, Practice, Practice
- Thank you Mr. Daugherty for this interview, we wish you the best in the Online Poker World Championship. Until the next time
- I hope to meet you soon at the tables. If we meet please say hi. Best of LUCK.
