The Online Poker World Championship has been very exciting so far, and one of the stars which first appeared in the sky was Matt “Worktopay” Richards; an online poker grinder coming from Willoughby, in the United States, who carries his National Flag with enormous pride and powerful skills. The News team had an interview with him and this is what he shared for the whole OPWC colleagues:
Hi Matt we are very happy to have the chance to talk to one of the OPWC top players of Period I. The rest of competitors are wondering who they’re really facing, let’s give them a little clue and please tell us
-How did you start playing poker?
-Well i would have to say I started playing "Poker" around age 9 or 10 with family playing nickel dime poker. I really did not get active till around 2005 when Texas Hold’em became very popular in the US. I was in my early 20's and playing in local tournaments put together by friends; placed only a few times over the years, then there came Full Tilt, Poker Stars etc. I played a lot of online poker at FullTilt and that’s mostly were my game started to evolve.
-What was the reason for you to continue playing?
-I’ve continued to play because I love the competition that comes with starring another player in the eyes when you know you have him beat. I’ve continued to play for fun and locally as the "Big" Poker sites all got shut down, and to my surprise about the beginning of 2025 I caught on to some new poker sites welcoming US poker players!
-What are your goals playing poker?
-My goal in playing poker is to make my name famous and to pull in the kind of money that will allow me to play full time.
-How did you come to the OPWC?
-The OPWC was actually an accident, I was scrolling Facebook one day and stumbled across the ad for it, I checked it out and here I am.
-What do you like about the OPWC?
-What I like about OPWC is that anybody has a chance from the intermediate to the veteran player, with the limit of 200 tourneys it really makes it fair for everyone!
-What are your expectations in the World Championship?
-As far as the World Championships I hope it gets worldwide recognition plus Television coverage.
-Any special anecdote about your nicknames on the tables?
-My nick name huh? Well it is what it is…I Work to Pay. I work hard for my money.
-You seem like a very disciplined player, how do you make it to climb at that pace?
-My key motto over the years is "Patience Pays" so naturally I’m disciplined.
-On which of the accepted poker rooms can we find you and what tourneys do you usually play?
-You can find me playing at Black Chip or Carbon, usually 6 man super turbo Sit n’ Gos.
-Do you have any comments about or for the competitors?
-Them Europeans are extremely strong, but I would beware of the US. And Guns I’m coming for you!
Thank you Matt for this wonderful time, the OPWC wishes you all the best for the season and hopes to see you doing even better in the coming days.
There you have him, a poker brawler with a steel discipline and clear goals, who fears nobody in the Ranking. The OPWC News Team will keep you posted about the performance of “worktopay” during the end of the Period I, and the rest of the season. Stay tuned and enjoy the competition
