The main goal of the Online Poker World Championship players is to become complete professionals who dominate not only a great arsenal of the skills required for the game but also a wide range of poker terms and knowledge that allows them to grow towards that high objective and make the best use of the poker sponsorship. In order to help all of you to reach that goal the News Team bring this week a cool compilation of exclusive words equally used by legends, famous grinders and even some new-comers with top expectations.
Wet Board: when you see the cards on the table and they are coordinated in extreme and their potential to hurt your stack is almost imminent you call it a Wet Board and you already know what to do if you don’t have the nuts in cases like this. RUN FORREST, RUN.
Overlay: An overlay takes place when a poker room has to add money from its own funds to the prizepool of a tournament that had a guaranteed amount for the winners but it wasn’t covered with the buy-ins made by the registered players. For example: Winner Poker offers a 100GTD tournament for $1.10 the entry but only 50 players get to register, then Winner will have to add 50 bucks to that prizepool given there were not enough participants. Some rooms try to avoid this possibility allowing long periods of “late registration”
Running like a Kenyan: habitual poker players use this expression to show off in front of their colleagues with the intention to emphasize they have been going through an excellent swing at the tables for a significantly long period with obvious and enviable winnings.
Sandbagging: When a player has a powerful hand and faces a raise from the opponent, he only makes a call with the intention to trap his rival and get the most chips out of his stack. Some people also call this poker move “slow playing”
Slowroll: This term is used when a player takes a very long time to make his move when there’s another player involved and committed with his complete stack into the pot. The purpose of a slowroller is to irritate or offend his opponent causing a posterior tilt; but this behavior is considered totally unsportsmanlike. (remember that people could have slow internet connection service at some moment of a tourney so don’t react too fast and control yourself if you see a player making an apparent slowroll”
Telegraph: you can use this word to define the tendency of some players to show their intentions in one hand before it’s their time to act. That would also be called an anticipated tell. Just imagine a player raises 500 chips and another player 3 sits from him immediately grabs 500, this is an almost obvious proof that he’s going to make a call when his turn comes and you can act accordingly.
YHS: also known as “Your Hand Sucks” This popular acronym is often used on many poker forums and is very common to see it on the chat thread of the tourneys and cash games.
